Defibrillator

How confident are you?

Heart attacks and cardiac arrests are the main conditions for which a defibrillator is used.

460 people die each day from a heart attack and about 335,000 people die each year from a cardiac arrest.

The CVRA organises occasional instruction sessions through the year on how to use the defibrillator and how to perform CPR: read about the most recent "Cardiovascular 101" event held on Aril 20th 2026.

Watch out for the date(s) of these sessions in the News area of this website and the CVRA Facebook Page .

Do attend one of these events and make sure you are confident and know what to do if an emergency happens - who knows ... it may save someone's life.

In a vital boost to local safety, Clifton Village has a fully functioning Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) installed to serve residents and visitors.

The device is located centrally on Village Road (NG11 8NE), positioned on the right-hand side heading into the village, after the historic thatched cottage.

"As a previous chairman of the CVRA, I am aware of all the good work that our Village committee do. With that in mind I will be eternally grateful that the decision was made to install a defibrillator on the wall of the Vicar's House on Village Road. Soon after, the CVRA arranged a demonstration at the Village Hall on CPR and how to use it. The overriding message was simple and reassuring: if the unthinkable ever happened, the machine would guide you step by step.

I suspect most of us left that evening thinking we would never need it. It was simply there - just in case.

Then came the evening of 6th September 2025.

At a party at Steve and Linda’s, I arrived - and very shortly afterwards collapsed. What followed was a cardiac arrest. Thanks to the calm actions of friends, CPR was started immediately. Someone ran next door to the Vicar's House and brought back the defibrillator.

I am told my heart had stopped for 14 or 15 minutes.

I was placed into a coma for two weeks and regained consciousness around 22nd September at QMC. I came home on 14th October and am now working through what doctors tell me will be a year-long recovery - the most frustrating part being that I cannot drive until May 2026.

But I am here.

The CPR and the swift use of the village defibrillator saved my life. Quite simply, without it - and without those who knew how to use it - I would not be writing this.

That 'just in case' decision made all the difference."

Our Community’s New Lifesaving Resource

#InThisTogether – Stop the Bleed

Clifton Village is proud to join the #InThisTogether – Stop the Bleed campaign, a vital new initiative launched across Nottinghamshire and nationally with one clear mission: to turn everyday residents into lifesavers.

This critical community safety campaign is spearheaded by ATTFE College in partnership with the Nottinghamshire Freemasons, CitizenAID, and Derbyshire’s CPTED-UK Ltd.

While many residents are already familiar with our Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) for cardiac arrests, severe traumatic injuries – such as those resulting from road accidents, serious falls, or domestic mishaps – require a completely different kind of urgent intervention. In cases of catastrophic bleeding, every second counts. It can become fatal in mere minutes, frequently before professional medical emergency services can physically reach our village location. By embedding this resource directly into our community, we ensure that the tools to intervene effectively are always within arm's reach.

The Bleed Kit is located inside the defibrillator cabinet.

What is a Stab/Bleed Kit?

Contrary to the name, these kits are not just for "stabbing" victims; they are designed for any incident involving major blood loss. The kit contains specialised equipment that goes beyond a standard first-aid box, including:

  • Medical-grade Tourniquets: To stop flow to a limb.
  • Haemostatic Dressings: Gauze treated with agents that help blood clot faster.
  • Chest Seals: For specific torso injuries.
  • Compressed Gauze and Foil Blankets: To manage wound packing and prevent hypothermia.

How to Act in an Emergency

Your Role in the "Chain of Survival"

Just like our Defibrillator, the Bleed Kit is designed to be used by any member of the public, regardless of whether you have formal medical training.

Always dial 999 first. The emergency dispatcher will guide you through the situation in real time. If a bleed kit is required, they will provide you with the access code to open the cabinet and talk you through exactly how to apply the specialised dressings or tourniquet.

Authoritative Resources & Training

We strongly encourage residents to spend just five minutes looking over these resources before an emergency occurs. Simple preparation saves lives.

  • The British Red Cross: Provides a comprehensive guide on First Aid for Severe Bleeding.
  • Knifesavers: Offer a simple guide and short video series on controlling a wound that is bleeding.
  • The Official citizenAID Mobile App: Because our kit is provided by citizenAID, you can download their free, ad-free mobile app. It provides immediate, step-by-step visual prompts to guide your actions. Crucially, once downloaded, the app functions completely offline without needing a mobile signal or data connection. Download via the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
