St Mary's Church

At St Mary’s, we believe that church is about people and the stories we share.

Led by Rev. Esther Hutchinson, our congregation offers a friendly space where everyone - from our youngest "Shooting Stars" to our longest-standing resident - can find a sense of belonging.

From the joy of new arrivals to the quiet dignity of saying goodbye, we are here to support you in all of life’s major events.

St Mary’s Church has been at the centre of life in Clifton Village for almost a thousand years.  Read about the history of St Mary's Church.

More information can be found on the St. Mary's Church website.

Life Events

Christening

A new baby is a source of much celebration, and a special service at church can be a wonderful way of bringing family and friends together to celebrate! If you would like a christening for your child, there are two options to choose from:

Baptism is a ceremony with water in which parents and godparents promise to bring the child up to be a Christian – to know and love Jesus.

Thanksgiving services are a bit more informal – they are a chance to thank God for the birth of the child, leaving an option for them to decide about baptism when they’re older.
We offer both services at either church to any family living in Clifton..

Weddings

Weddings in church are a special celebration of love. It’s not only two people coming together but also an opportunity to pray for God’s blessing on the marriage.

If you live in Clifton (or have a qualifying connection), you can marry at either St Mary’s, Clifton Village or Holy Trinity with St Francis on the estate.

Funerals

When someone you love passes away, it’s a deeply emotional time, and we want to help give them the best send-off possible.

A Church of England funeral can take place in one of our churches, followed by a short committal service at a crematorium or burial service in a cemetery. Alternatively, the entire service can be conducted in the chapel at a crematorium.

We have a strong working relationship with Lymns and Co-op, and together we will create a service that is just right for your family. We will include special prayers, select a Bible reading, and leave plenty of space for personal tributes, poems, and music.

You do not need to be a churchgoer to have a Church of England funeral – simply inform your funeral director, and they will contact us on your behalf.

Directions

Enter Clifton Village from the A453. Drive along Village Road to the "T" junction with Holgate (about 600m) and turn right. The church is about 200m further ahead on your left.

Parking

There are parking restrictions throughout the village on a week day. If visiting during the week, please use the "Fisherman's Car Park" that can be found just a short walk away from the church. If this car park is full, please park around the grass green directly outside of the churchyard. If in doubt, contact the church beforehand.

Accessibility

The footpath from the road to the church is a little steep. Ramps are available for access into the building itself. A hearing loop is available.

Meet the Vicar

Vicar of St Mary's

Esther has been based in Clifton since June 2020.

She has a heart for people and what's going on in their lives. She loves a good chat, so please do get in touch.

Esther lives in the village with her family and their dog. One of her favourite things to do is to go out with her family on her day off, whether its a walk in the country, a trip to the garden centre or of course a visit to the farm.
