This is a message from Neighbourhood Alert.
Over the past few days there have been several instances of actual
and attempted distraction burglaries throughout Nottinghamshire.
In order to minimise the risk of becoming a victim, be alert when
answering your door to strangers.
Look out of the window to see if you know the caller.
If you cannot see, or do not recognise the caller shout "Who
is it?"
If the caller says they are from a gas, water or electric company,
ask them to quote the customer number, which is on the top of
your bill. Remember, the Water Board do not exist.
If you do not know them and they cannot give you a customer number
ask them to come back at a time when you arrange for someone to
be with you.
Genuine callers will understand your concerns and will not argue
with you or pressurise you into opening the door. They will not
mind if you ring the organisation to check.
Council or Social Services will always make an appointment before
coming to see you.
Do not keep large amounts of cash in the house.
Never let anyone pressurise you into opening the door.
You are not being rude, you are being careful.
Genuine callers will understand this.
Do not open the door unless you know the caller or have checked
their identity.
If you have a security chain, use it before opening the door.
Please pass this advice onto those you know who may benefit
from it.
